Dear Mom & Dad –
I’m still at the air strip shootin’ down at the Japs. The flying is getting a little rougher now – the rainy season has set in. Once in awhile the clouds & rain closes in & tries to hide the field on us. So far it hasn’t succeeded. It’s still a lot better than sweating out that doughboy foxhole. The wet weather is making the front lines very miserable.
Today we had about 6 native boys working like bees around here. They’re putting in a bamboo flooring for us. These boys are really clever at this type of work – they all seem to be carpenters. They use only one tool – the bolo knife. You should see them put-out for us. I set a pack of cigarettes on the table so they could help themselves while they work – it’s all the inspiration they need. By tomorrow we’ll laugh at the rain.
Tonight we heard that the German fleet had been ordered to turn themselves in to an allied port. That sounds good – hope both of their ships surrender. Looks as if it’s all over in Europe now except for a little mopping-up. It certainly cost a lot of heartaches. I only hope the peace we get will be deserving of all the lives that were spent to attain it. If only Japan would wake up to the obvious fact that they will be whipped ---------------
Whoops – just had the news on the radio that Germany surrenders unconditionally Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m almost too excited to write. Now Japs – look out!
Glad to hear that Swany has been over to the house to visit with you – it must be fun to see & talk to all those friends of mine that are coming home all the time. Did you give Swany a high-ball, Dad?
Yeah, that meat shortage is pretty mean I guess. Would it make you jealous to know that we had pork chops for dinner tonight? See – you ought to be overseas – like we lucky ones!
Will ask Denny about this Jr. Elms girlfriend when I get a chance.
Somehow the cheese & thermometer was missing from that package. It was torn open so I can imagine about what happened.
Well I’m to happy to write anymore – gotta move around. Feel fine – who wouldn’t! Bye now.
Love, Dip
